Ocean and river swimming has been around in Tasmania for a long time but in the past 2 decades it has become one of the fastest growing leisure activities. New wetsuit technology and the pleasure of swimming in the natural environment has contributed to the rapid growth. Surf lifesaving clubs are ideally placed to host swims as it is a chance to engage with the local community, demonstrate and communicate water safety measures and provide members and the local community with a safe aquatic environment. The swims conducted by surf lifesaving clubs in Tasmania are conducted under strict safety guidelines that ensure protection for participants and event management. Swim courses, distances and formats are very diverse and take account of the various options available at each of the venues. Over the summer months swims are offered all around Tasmania from Boat Harbour to Bridport, Bicheno and urban locations from Carlton to Kingston.
The much loved Tasmanian Ocean Swim Series is back in 2020-2021, proudly sponsored by Engine Swim. With open swims ranging from 1.2km to 2.6kms, and selected novice events of 500M for those new to ocean swimming to build skill and confidence.
