What is the Junior Lifesaver Camp?

The Junior Lifesaver Camp (JLC) is a three day live in program designed to promote the pathways in Surf Life Saving. While there has been similar camps delivered in Tasmania previously, the 2023 JLC will be the first of its format.

JLC was constructed in response to an identified need. The low retention rate of members between nippers and patrolling is significant. The camp has been designed to support members aged 13 - 15 years that are in the “in-between” phase of lifesaving. These members have completed Nippers and searching for their path in Surf Life Saving. JLC aims to assist in this process. 

To encourage teamwork and foster camaraderie among the participants, the camp will incorporate team challenges and group activities. Lifesaving scenarios will be simulated, allowing the young members to work together in a coordinated manner, practice communication skills, and develop a strong sense of trust and reliance on their fellow teammates.

The Junior Lifesaver Camp will not only enhance the participants' existing skills but will also provide them with opportunities for personal growth and self-confidence. Guest speakers, including experienced youth and successful lifesavers, will share their inspiring stories and insights, motivating the young members to aim higher and excel in their lifesaving journey.

Participants of the Junior Lifesaver Camp will leave with friends, self confidence and a vision for their future in Surf Life Saving.

Who is this for?

  • Current financial members with an affiliated organisation (clubs & VMR)
  • Members aged between 13 & 15

The nomination process

All interested applicants are encouraged to apply. The target age group for the camp is between 13 and 15 years. Endorsement by a club representative (for example, Club President, Junior Activities Coordinator, Lifesaving Manager) is required.

Once all applications have been received they will be reviewed. It is hoped that all interested members can attend, however numbers will be capped due to accommodation and camp logistics. In consultation with the clubs, priority will be given to ensure there is representation from across the state, and to the older members, as the 13 year olds will have another opportunity the following year.

All applicants will be notified directly as to whether they have been offered a spot. Unsuccessful applicants will be waitlisted in the event a spot becomes available. To discuss this further, please contact us (details below).

The cost of the Junior Lifesaver Camp will be subsidised by SLST. The camp fee is expected to be approx. $150.00 per participant which covers all accommodation, food, activities, and transport (if required) during the camp.
