Collectively Surf Life Saving Tasmania and affiliated clubs and Marine Rescue services are now able to provide inland, inshore, offshore including swiftwater and flood search and rescue services around Tasmania in addition to the Jet Rescue Boats located at Bridport and Ulverstone with Rescue Water Craft (RWC) in Frederick Henry Bay.
The integration and management of Tasmania's marine rescue volunteers into a single entity and under the management of a peak body (Surf Life Saving Tasmania) commenced in 2010/11.
In Australia marine rescue volunteers play a critical role in providing a support service to Police for maritime search and rescue responses for persons and vessels in distress at sea within state controlled waters.
Due to the remoteness of our coastline, volunteers in many areas provide the first and sometimes only response with rescue craft that are able to respond in sufficient time to save lives or to prevent a situation escalating whereby a tragedy may occur.
