Surf boat racing is one of the most exciting and iconic disciplines in Surf Life Saving. Each boat is powered by four rowers and guided by a sweep, with crews racing head-to-head from the beach, battling through the surf and out to a set of turning buoys. After rounding the cans, teams sprint back toward shore, maintaining their assigned lane or alley.

Crew members must be volunteer Surf Life Savers to compete. The rowing discipline commands a high level of fitness, commitment and skill. It complements the core set of competencies volunteer surf life savers must possess in order to obtain the Bronze Medallion qualification and patrol beaches.

Surf boat racing takes place throughout the Australian summer, with hundreds of dedicated crews competing around the country.
