Surf Life Saving Tasmania is celebrating National Volunteers Week (18-24 May 2026) and all the incredible volunteers by sharing some of the stories of those in the community.
Kate Pilkington and Clare Houston at Clifton Beach Surf Life Saving Club began their journey simply by taking their children to Nippers each week, but they have since progressed to sharing the responsibilities of Junior Activities Coordinators.
“We gradually became more involved each season,” said Pilkington about their involvement with the club.
“We both completed our Bronze Medallion so we could contribute more on the beach and help support an age group.
“Before we knew it, we’d stepped into the Junior Activities Coordinator roles,” she said.
Junior Activities Coordinators manage a variety of tasks, focusing primarily on administrative and organisational duties. While they oversee the broader operations, Age Managers lead the weekly sessions, with additional volunteers assisting in areas like the canteen, fundraising, and carnivals.
“Each Sunday we run Nippers sessions for around ninety enthusiastic participants,” said Houston. “We still get plenty of time on the beach.”
Both women highlight the importance of overall team support from their Nipper Committee.
“There was no way either of us was doing this role alone. Both of us work full- time,” said Pilkington.
“Teamwork is essential, and sharing the role makes it achievable and enjoyable.”
The surf life saving community brings together people who love competition but also care deeply about others and the environment. The surf club fosters a strong sense of community.
A key highlight of their time in their role so far is seeing the journey of those who take part in the Nippers program.
“Witnessing the journey from the beginning till becoming a senior and active patrol member is something special,” said Houston.
Most recently, a volunteer remarked to the duo that “Surf club fills your cup” - a demonstration of the positive impact these two volunteers have had so far in surf life saving.
When it comes to joining the movement as a volunteer, Pilkington shared her advice.
“You will make lifelong friends. Once you put your hand up there is always a role for you,” she said.
