More than 200 of Tasmania’s best surf lifesaving athletes will head to Carlton Park SLSC this weekend for the 2026 Tasmanian Open State Championships, with strong competition expected across both individual and club events.
Hosted by Carlton Park SLSC on 14-15 March, the championships is shaping up to be one of the most competitive carnivals of the season.
Carnival Referee Craig Mackinnon said conditions are shaping up well for the weekend, giving competitors every chance to perform at their best.
“Conditions are looking great at Carlton Beach. With light winds, plenty of sunshine and solid swell, athletes can look forward to what should be an excellent event,” he said.
Entries are particularly strong in the younger age groups, highlighting the depth of emerging surf sports across Tasmania.
Several standout athletes are expected to feature prominently across the two days of racing. Anderson Towns is tipped to be a strong contender in both the U17 and Open men’s water events. Originally from Penguin SLSC, Towns will compete under the Alexander Headlands Club cap, where he has been training for most of the summer.
Clifton Beach SLSC’s Cate Clingeleffer will again be among the favourites in the Open women’s events, although Mackinnon said competition in the category is expected to be tight.
The race for the overall club title is also expected to be closely contested with Clifton Beach, Burnie and host club Carlton Park all in the mix.
Reigning champions Clifton Beach will be aiming to defend their title with strong representation across multiple age categories.
For many athletes, the championships will also serve as the final major competition before travelling to Queensland later this month for the 2026 Australian Surf Life Saving Championship at Kirra Beach.
“This is the final competitive hit-out for athletes preparing to travel and compete at this year's Aussies. For many, it marks the culmination of up to 10 months of training,” Mackinnon said.
