Devonport Hosts Pilot Emerging Volunteer Leaders Program

Sunday 08 March 2026

On 20-22 February, Surf Life Saving Tasmania, in partnership with the SLS National Centre of Excellence for Cultural Leadership, ran the pilot of the Emerging Volunteer Leaders Program in Devonport.

The program brought together participants and facilitators from across Tasmania and NSW with sessions focused on developing skills, discussing personal leadership strengths and confidence in leadership.

There was also an insightful Q&A panel for participants which included Jules Scarlett, Stuart Rayner (Raspins Beach SLSC) and Allison Kable (Carlton Park SLSC), who spoke on their leadership experiences.

Louise Cooke, Surf Life Saving NSW General Manager for Culture and Capability, worked with the facilitators as the program led to build a strong foundation for developing future leaders at local clubs and across the surf life saving community.

“It’s about building a strong pipeline of leaders and developing them in ways that ensure volunteers have a positive and rewarding experience within the organisation,” Cooke said.

“It’s great to see the depth of talent and passion for the movement. Seeing members step up and want to lead is incredibly positive for the long-term sustainability of our organisation.”

The program invited volunteers aged 18 years and over to understand their own strengths and growth areas as leaders and begin developing the skills to lead in a way that supports volunteer motivation, satisfaction and retention.

“It was great to see such a diverse mix of ages join the program, from late teens to members in their mid-50s. People begin their leadership journeys at different times, and it’s never too late to make a difference,” Cooke said.

Among the participants, many gave strong recommendations for those considering joining the program, no matter what age.

“I would highly recommend this program. Go in with a positive outlook and be prepared to get motivated,” said one participant.

Another said the program highlighted the strong connection between professional work careers and the volunteer roles.

"I discovered how significant the role of volunteers is in maintaining such an influential organisation and how emerging and experienced leaders can effectively support this,” they said.
