Women in Powercraft Program supports IRB skills and confidence

Friday 12 June 2026

More than 30 surf lifesavers came together at Clifton Beach from 6–8 June for Surf Life Saving Tasmania’s Women in Powercraft Program.

The three-day inclusive program supported participants to build their Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) skills and confidence, with training streams delivered for IRB Crew, IRB Driver, and Trainer and Assessor pathways.

The program was developed to help address the participation gap in powercraft operations. In Tasmania, only 39% of Bronze-qualified female members hold an IRB Crew award and 10% hold a Silver Medallion IRB Driver award, compared with 56% and 36% of male members respectively.

Across the weekend, participants completed structured on-water training, developed rescue skills, and worked with experienced trainers and mentors.

Feedback from participants highlighted the supportive training environment and the value of learning alongside peers.

“Amazing support from trainers who really celebrated each of our wins, with applause and high fives. Flexible training and a full understanding that we all learn in different ways and at different paces.”

“Everyone had the right outlook and came willing to learn. I felt very supported and took away plenty of learning experiences personally.”

Participants also reflected on the confidence gained through the program.

“The Women in Powercraft Program has increased my capacity and confidence as a surf lifesaver. I feel empowered training and collaborating with my peers and enjoy seeing other young females find a spark of joy and confidence within the program.”

“I came away from the weekend feeling empowered and confident. I enjoyed meeting new trainers, mentors and club members. I would love to continue on with more training, and I would also like to consider becoming a Crew Trainer.”

SLST thanks the participants, trainers, mentors and support volunteers who contributed to the weekend, as well as Clifton Beach SLSC for hosting the program.

The Women in Powercraft Program supports the development of more qualified crew, drivers and trainers across Tasmania, helping clubs strengthen their lifesaving capability.
