Kingston Beach came alive on Saturday 17th January as lifesavers from across the state gathered for the 2026 Tasmanian Lifesaving Championships - Champion Lifesaver event.
Hosted by Kingston Beach Surf Life Saving Club, the event drew solid support from families, officials and the local community.
“The atmosphere was great,” said Liz Eustace, the Carnival Referee for the event. “Kingston Beach SLSC did a fantastic job hosting the event and pulling together a strong workforce to ensure it all ran smoothly.”
A total of 23 athletes competed representing six Tasmanian clubs - Clifton Beach, Penguin, Ulverstone, Kingston Beach, Raspins Beach and Burnie - alongside one interstate club, Northcliffe from Queensland. Competitors ranged from under 14 athletes through to Masters, highlighting the inclusive nature of the Champion Lifesaver event.
Champion Lifesaver is unique within the Tassie surf sports calendar, combining physical surf and beach events with core lifesaving skills and knowledge. Athletes were tested across a theory examination, live and manikin resuscitation assessments, beach sprint, and ski, board and rescue-tube races.
“Having this event each season is important to develop our lifesavers in a competitive manner and environment,” Eustace said, noting its role in preparing athletes for higher-level competition.
Several standout performances were recorded over the weekend. Nathan Williamson (Clifton Beach) impressed across multiple disciplines, recording top scores in both the theory paper and practical resuscitation for the U17 to Masters category, before going on to claim the Open male title.
Josephine Christensen (Northcliffe QLD) also delivered an outstanding performance, topping the Open Female standings overall and earning the highest theory score in her division, while Kingston Beach’s Katarina Cubit was crowned the Tasmanian Open Female Champion.
With Champion Lifesaver a restricted selection event at the Aussies, age group winners from the event at Kingston Beach have now earned the opportunity to represent Tasmania on the national stage.
