Surf Life Saving Tasmania (SLST) has officially marked the end of its 2025/2026 patrol season, recognising the dedication of volunteers across the state who have worked tirelessly to keep the community safe.
Throughout the season, volunteer surf lifesavers across the 18 clubs and volunteer marine rescue units contributed over 18,500+ patrol hours, responding to incidents and providing a visible safety presence along patrolled beaches.
During this time, lifesavers performed 20 rescues, with a significant 88 per cent occurring outside the red and yellow flags, reinforcing the importance of swimming in patrolled areas. Volunteers also delivered 82 first aid treatments and undertook 365 preventative actions, helping stop incidents before they escalated.
SLST President Stuart Paine said the statistics highlight both the commitment of volunteers and the ongoing need for the public to make safe choices around the water.
“Our volunteers are the backbone of surf life saving in Tasmania, and this season is another example of the incredible work they do to keep our community safe,” Mr Paine said.
“From long hours on patrol to responding when it matters most, their commitment to protecting others is something we’re extremely proud of.”
Mr Paine said the efforts of volunteers extend far beyond rescues.
“While rescues are often what people see, it’s the preventative work - the conversations, the warnings, the guidance - that makes a real difference every single day,” he said.
“Our members give up their time, often in challenging conditions, to look after people they’ve never met. That level of dedication is truly remarkable.”
“As we move out of the patrol season, it’s important to remember that this volunteer patrol presence won’t be there, so we’re asking everyone to take extra responsibility for their own safety and look out for one another.”
SLST extends its sincere thanks to all volunteers, members and supporters who contributed to another season of patrolling and saving lives.
