Sam Hess helping shape the next generation at Devonport SLSC

Behind every successful junior surf lifesaving program is a passionate volunteer, and for Devonport Surf Life Saving Club, that person is Sam Hess.

As Junior Activities Coordinator, Sam plays a vital role in developing young surf lifesavers, building their confidence, and fostering a strong sense of community within the club.

Each week, Sam coordinates a structured and engaging Juniors and Nippers Program for Devonport SLSC. Sessions run on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, each with a clear focus.

“At the start of each week, I plan our upcoming sessions and send a message to all coaches outlining what the week will look like,” Hess said.

“Tuesday is typically our competition-focused session, where we work on race skills and fitness. Thursday and Sunday sessions are open to all juniors and focus on beach awareness, surf skills, and building confidence in the water.”

With an emphasis on safety, development, and inclusion, Sam ensures every session provides opportunities for juniors of all abilities to learn and grow, something he finds especially rewarding as he watches their confidence develop.

“What I enjoy most is seeing the kids improve and grow in confidence, particularly in the water,” he said.

“Watching a child who may start off nervous develop skills, confidence, and independence is incredibly rewarding.”

That growth is not just physical, but personal. Over time, Sam has seen many juniors come out of their shell and develop into capable and confident young people.

“They really start to embrace what we’re teaching them about beach safety and surf skills,” he said.

“They become more confident, more capable, and more willing to challenge themselves, not just in the surf, but also socially and as young leaders within the club.”

One standout story highlights the program’s impact, with a young girl who once struggled with confidence and hesitated to leave her parents’ side now transformed into a leader within the club.

“With support and encouragement, she grew in confidence and developed her skills,” he said.

“She is now one of our young leaders, who is confident, capable, and always willing to take on any challenge we throw at her.

“Seeing that transformation is exactly why we do what we do.”

Sam encourages anyone considering volunteering to take the leap, describing it as one of the most fulfilling experiences available within surf lifesaving.

“Definitely give it a go and back yourself. It’s one of the most rewarding roles I’ve ever had,” Hess said.

“Seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces and knowing you’re helping them grow in confidence and skills makes it all worthwhile.

“After a day at work, heading down to the club and helping shape the next generation of surf lifesavers is an incredibly fulfilling feeling.”

Through dedicated volunteers like Sam, Surf Life Saving Tasmania continues to build strong, confident and capable young surf lifesavers, ensuring the future of the movement remains in great hands.
