Surf Life Saving Tasmania is proud to announce their Surf Sports Performance Squad for the upcoming 2025-26 season.
From Under 13 to Under 19s, there have been a total of 68 young athletes chosen by the selection panel.
Surf Sports State Advisor, Luke O’Garey, is excited to give young athletes an opportunity to work with the best surf sports coaches in Tasmania,
“We look forward to bringing all these athletes together so they can improve their skills, fitness and competitive edge through more structured training sessions and coaching, with more experienced and high profile coaches around Tassie,” he said.
The squad will be taking part in regional training sessions in the north and the south of the state as well as joint training sessions. The training will focus on various skills based sessions, fitness testing, discussions on the mental sides of racing.
“It helps prepare them as best they can for the upcoming season and so they can reach their goals,” O’Garey said.
O’Garey has been involved in coaching Tasmanian teams for many years, including being the Head Coach for Burnie SLSC. In his new role as the Surf Sports State Advisor, he’s keen to help improve the surf sports landscape in Tasmania.
“I want to really make sure our members have a voice and let them help shape what we do.
I also want to put on events that really attract young members, and they really want to be a part of it, so they walk away from our weekend pretty pumped and happy with what you know we've offered them as a state,” he said.
In what he’s looking forward to the most with working with this season’s Performance Squad, O’Garey said the growth in the young athletes will be great to watch and be a part of.
“Seeing the outcomes and the confidence that comes with providing these sessions for younger athletes. We will have some great coaches come along and help and mentor these young ones who've done this in the past and performed on national stages.”
