If Will Scott is not on the tools he is on the beach.
The 17-year-old has not only been busy completing his chippy apprenticeship but has been amassing some of the highest patrol hours in the state this season.
The Kingston Beach SLSC Vice-Patrol Captain has so far notched up an astonishing 50 hours this season across Kingston Beach SLSC, Carlton Parks SLSC, Clifton Beach SLSC and Bicheno SLSC.
Now in his fourth season of patrol, Will said it is a sense of community that surf life saving has fostered in Tassie, that first drew him to the beach.
“It is a great community and everyone is really friendly,” said Will. “By the end of my first season I was just absolutely in love with it.
“It has given me something to do on the weekends and I get to help the community at the same time.
“My love of surf life saving has just grown from there, to the point where I’m just trying to take on every single opportunity that is given to me.”
While Will has always participated heavily within his local club , obtaining his license this season has allowed him to expand his involvement within the greater Surf Life Saving Tasmania community.
“My highlight of this season so far has been going around to all the other clubs and seeing how they operate, because every club is different,” said Will.
“So I’ve been able to bring back what I have learnt to the club and implement them in my patrol.”
Since joining at the age of 14 he has since inspired his own family to get involved at Kingston, with his younger brother now a patrolling member and his parents regularly offering a hand around the club.
It is Will’s aspiration to not only take on the role of patrol captain next year, but travel to more clubs right across the state.
“This season I have been looking to go around to all the southern clubs, but next season I hope to visit the whole state and see what everyone else does as well,” said Will.
