In what has been a heavily male dominated operation, Surf Life Saving Tasmania are aiming to encourage more women and non-binary members to become crew, drivers, trainers and assessors for inflatable rescue boats (IRBs).
The IRB is an integral piece of rescue equipment and is used for routine patrolling, water safety and search and rescue operations.
However nationwide, only 16 percent of IRB drivers are female.
SLST has enlisted the help of trainers such as Amber Loone in an attempt to place more females at the helm of IRBs in Tasmania.
Amber is currently in her 20th patrolling season at Devonport SLSC. The proud Trainer and Assessor has been running IRB programs since 2022, but has this season been involved in programs specifically targeted towards female members.
“I believe that targeted programs help boost participation and confidence by tailoring training opportunities,” said Amber. “Many women hesitate to take on physically demanding rescue roles due to limited experience or a lack of specific support.
“Dedicated programs offer a supportive environment to build skills, fostering mentorship, teamwork and long-term involvement.
“Initiatives like the SLST IRB Training for Women in Lifesaving program strengthens connections, empowers women and creates a more inclusive club culture.”
Amber will be one of the trainers present at this year's SLST IRB Training for Women in Lifesaving program.
The program, which will be held from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 May in the state’s southern region, will provide both female and non-binary members with IRB crew and driver courses in a safe and inclusive environment.
