Carlton Park Surf Life Saving Club will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025 and they’re already eyeing off a fifth straight State Masters title after topping the pointscore in this years event on the weekend.
So dominant was the performance of Carlton Park on Saturday that they scored 51 event victories, with all other clubs combining to win the other 52.
They finished the carnival with 99 top six results to score 495 points, more than 250 points clear of hosts Ulverstone (238 points) with Burnie taking out third place overall.
Club stalwart Don Marsh, said his was proud of how the club has focused on the Masters to be the backbone of the club.
“Carlton Park has for many years now flown the flag at State, National and even the world titles,” he said. “We’ve built on our numbers in the last few years, recruited from outside and now we have more people on patrol too.”
Marsh was amongst a host of Carlton Park competitors who were rarely under the tent, consistently toeing the start line in beach, water and team events, all with the aim of boosting the club’s overall result.
“The reason for that [the victory] is a good spread of members,” he said. We’ve got a few in the 30s, the 50s are particularly strong and we have competitors right up to my age.”
Marsh said that while he hopes the club will have a number of competitors on the Gold Coast in August representing Carlton Park at the Lifesaving World Championships, he and the others are already gearing up for a year of celebrations for the club’s 50th birthday next year.
“It will be a busy year - a lot of events going on to organise but absolutely, we’ll be gunning for five in a row!”
