Clingleffer chasing more State Championships silverware

Friday 22 March 2024

To win the overall pointscore at the State Championships, a club needs to have good numbers, strong talent and a lot of depth.

Clifton Beach has no shortage of that in 2023 en route to topping the pointscore by 84 points.

However a key contributor to their success was teenage sensation Cate Clingleffer who matched her titanic schedule with an unfathomable success rate.

Across the U17s and Opens, Cate finished in the top three no less than 19 times, with her individual and team performance contributing more than 100 points to Clifton Beach’s total.

Coming into this weekend’s event at Penguin SLSC, Clingleffer has no idea how many events she has been entered into, but will combine U19 and Open events in what she hopes will be another successful weekend.

“I feel good at the moment, I’ve been training well working on somethings and I think I’m developing my ski so really looking forward to racing this weekend,” said Clingleffer. “All across Tasmania there’s been good strong competition from all of the clubs.”

While Clingleffer will be off to Aussies in a few weeks time chasing individual success, she is well aware that State Championships provide a unique opportunity for Clifton Beach to come together as a club and taste glory together.

“The most important thing is to get as many teams as we can across as many events and as many age groups,” she said. “Every point counts at State Titles… I really want to win it again!

“When I go to Aussies I’ll give it a real crack, and this carnival will really help build the base.”

Clifton Beach has already claimed the overall pointscore in the Junior State Championships while Carlton Park took out the Masters pointscore a fortnight ago.

Last year, Clifton Beach, Burnie and Carlton Park took out 96 of the 112 events, with the three powerhouse clubs again expected to be there and the business end of the weekend.
