Tasmanian athletes have returned from the 2024 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships on the Sunshine Coast with a number of athletes earning places on the podium, scoring team points and proudly representing their club and state.
Carlton Park showcased some of the form which saw them dominate the Tasmanian Masters Championships on their way to 34th place overall at the Aussies.
The powerhouse club scored two gold medals thanks to Jayde Richardson in the 30-34yrs 2km ocean swim and Jamie Stubbs in the 50-54yrs ski. Jayde also finished fourth in the 2km beach run and fifth in the surf race while Jamie joined Greg Stubbs in a sixth place finish in the double ski.
Club legend Don Marsh was second in both the 70-74yrs surf race and 2km ocean swim as well as finishing third in the ironman.
Anna Sargeant took home a podium performance with second place in the 50-54yrs ironwoman, also finishing fourth in ski and partnered with Anne Henderson for fifth in the board rescue.
Joseph Watson scored points across three events, with top six results in the 30-34yrs ironman, surf race and board.
Burnie was 63rd out of 169 clubs which featured in the Masters Championships with three trips to the podium.
Nathan Cross was second in the 30-34yrs ski and teamed with John Lakeland to claim another silver in the double ski. The women’s 200 years surf boat (Ian Guest, Stephanie Prendergast, Rachel Grey, Roz Watkins, Kin Harland) picked up the bronze medal.
Burnie was also on the scoreboard at the Open Championships, with two Under 17 athletes flying the club colours high.
The Champion Lifesaver event returned to the SLST program this year and Gracie Mulley took her experience to the national stage to finish fifth. Clubmate Gemma King scored a top five finish in the 2km beach run.
Clifton Beach matched Burnie on the pointscore with four points of their own coming from Cate Clingeleffer. The versatile Under 19 athlete was third in the 2km beach run, also qualifying for the final of the ski and quarterfinals of the ironwoman, surf race board.
