Building safer communities around the water

Surf Life Saving Tasmania delivers a range of community programs designed to help people stay safe, confident and capable in, on and around the water.

The Community Programs team works with schools, community groups, families and partner organisations across the state to provide education, training and inclusive programs that support safer participation in aquatic environments.

Our focus is on education, prevention and inclusion — helping more people enjoy Tasmania’s waterways safely.

Why It matters

Tasmania’s coastline and waterways are a key part of our lifestyle — but they can also present hidden risks.

Many incidents occur because people:

  • Don’t recognise hazards such as rip currents

  • Overestimate their ability in the water

  • Are unfamiliar with local conditions

    Our Aim

Building knowledge and confidence is one of the most effective ways to prevent incidents and keep people safe.

Surf Life Saving programs are designed to:

    • Improve awareness of hazards and risks

    • Support safer decision-making

    • Build confidence in aquatic environments

    • Encourage lifelong safe behaviours

Community education plays a vital role in reducing risk and creating safer communities.
