The ASIDE course is a challenging award, which provides teachers, outdoor educators and other community members the knowledge and skills to be able to supervise people in a dynamic open water environment.

This award is the minimum qualification for those who wish to participate in beach/water activities adhering to the Tasmanian DoE Guidelines. The practical and theoretical sections of the award are designed to test a person's competency in surf awareness, survival, patrol and rescue procedures, basic first aid plus anatomy and physiology. A candidates physical fitness is tested by a 200m run- 200m swim- 200m run completed in under eight minutes and simulated rescues using a rescue board and tube. All these skills combine to train candidates to be effective leaders tasked with providing a safe beach and aquatic environment.

  • Apply surf awareness and self-rescue skills (PUSAR012C)

  • Participate in aquatic rescue operations (PUASAR013A)  

  • Provide CPR (HLTAID001)

ASIDE Pre-requisites

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age on the date of assessment (under 18 parent/ carer/ guardian consent required) and

  • Must complete a 400 metre swim in nine minutes or less, in a swimming pool of not less than 25 metres or over a measured open water course before any training starts in the surf and/or deep water. This component is done on the first day of the course.

Pool to ASIDE Bridging Course Pre-requisites 

  • Swimming and Water Safety Program Instructor/Teacher, to currently hold and have updated;

  • Provide CPR (HLTAID001)

  • Perform Basic Water Rescues (SISCAQU002)

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age on the date of assessment (where the candidate is under 18 they must have a parent/guardian consent)

  • Must agree to adhere to SLST policies and procedures

ASIDE - Full Course (Two Days) - $220 per candidate (price includes training manual and pool entry)

ASIDE - Skills Maintenance Course ( One Day)  - $110 for annual update 

Pool to ASIDE bridging Course (Half Day) - $150 (discounted rate $110 for SWSP Seminar Attendees)
