Hello fellow ocean swimmers,

As we move closer to warmer days and water temperature it is time to dust off the wetie, swim cap and goggles.

So what is planned for this summer?

Firstly the series will follow the schedule similar to past years with events conducted throughout the state from Boat Harbour to Port Arthur. The full swim schedule is attached.so mark your diaries.

As you will note a number of swims are “back to back” which will largely reduce travel and free up more weekends over our compressed summer period. It is hoped that the single event swimmers may be enticed to other swims. The downside is that swimmers might have to balance their workload.

  • The series point scoring swims will vary in distance from 1.2 KM to 2.6 KM
  • The success of the Team Challenge last year means it is back again so start encouraging your friends and swim partners to come along and try Australia’s fastest growing sport. Teams can be made up of any swim squad, surf club, tri club or any “like minded” group.
  • Novice swims over 500 M are held at most events to encourage those new to ocean swimming to gradually gain skills and confidence.
  • A “dash for cash” was introduced at Burnie last year and will be extended at other events this season.

Keeping you up to date with what is going on with ocean swimming in Tasmania will occur in the following ways.

  • Occassional emails conveying important messages and promotions
  • Frequent Facebook posts on Tasmanian Ocean Swim Series Facebook page. This will include event flyers, event results and series point updates. These will be posted as host clubs submit.
  • Surf Life Saving Tasmania website for entry forms, flyers and results. Go to http://www.slst.asn.au/surf-sports/tasmanian-ocean-swim-series
  • The Tassie swims will feature on a number of national ocean swim websites so who knows who might turn up.

Lastly, we have had tremendous growth in participation over the past few years but we have also noticed some drop off. if you are one of the 20% of swimmers who did not reappear last year from the year before or if you swam last year and do not intend to swim this year we would be keen to hear from you. No longer swimming, time poor, events don’t suit me or have become a couch potato? Send your responses to dmarsh@eftel.net.au

See you in the water or on the beach

Ocean Swimming in Tasmania

Ocean and river swimming has been around in Tasmania for a long time but in the past 2 decades it has become one of the fastest growing leisure activities. New wetsuit technology and the pleasure of swimming in the natural environment has contributed to the rapid growth. Surf lifesaving clubs are ideally placed to host swims as it is a chance to engage with the local community, demonstrate and communicate water safety measures and provide members and the local community with a safe aquatic environment. The swims conducted by surf lifesaving clubs in Tasmania are conducted under strict safety guidelines that ensure protection for participants and event management. Swim courses, distances and formats are very diverse and take account of the various options available at each of the venues. Over the summer months swims are offered all around Tasmania from Boat Harbour to Bridport, Bicheno to Port Arthur together with urban locations from Carlton to Kingston.

Participants come from diverse backgrounds including swim clubs, triathlon groups and surf clubs but many just enjoy a recreational swim.
