Tasmania's young surf life saving stars will be on show in a special carnival at the Wrest Point Sandy Bay Regatta.
Around 200 nippers will take part in this years Sandy Bay Regional Junior Surf Life Saving Carnival, which is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet.
The carnival is already an important fixture on the state's junior surf sport calendar, and with more than 10,000 people flocking to last years Australia Day Regatta, the young nippers can expect a huge audience.
Events include, board rescue and relay races, junior iron person, beach sprints and flags, and the iconic Cameron Relay which will pit Clifton Beach against it's friendly neighbourhood rival, Carlton Park.
The carnival will kick off with a kid's beach fun run that will be open to everyone on the day.
Surf Life Saving Tasmania's Program and Events co-ordinator, Mel Bush, said that while this is a great fun event, it has a crucial safety element as well.
"Our junior surf life savers will also use the carnival as a valuable way to build on their vital surf skills which may well be called upon in the future to help save a life," Ms Bush said.
The value to the community that Surf Life Saving provides nationally has been estimated at more than $1.4 billion each year.
Last year volunteer surf lifesavers rescued more than 12,000 people and provided more than 1.4 million hours of patrol time.
Tasmania has more than 3000 Surf Life Savers representing 15 clubs.
The Australia day surf lifesaving carnival kicks off at 10am at the newly renovated Long Beach, and will finish at 2pm on January 26. |
