ROTARY SUPPORTS THE BRIDPORT SLSC The Rotary Club of Scottsdale has presented a new inflatable rescue boat to the Bridport Surf Life Saving Club. The boat represents a donation of almost $9,000 and is the largest supporting donation to be received by the surf club to date. The funds were raised by RC Scottsdale hosting the Australian Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians a few years ago. President Michael Irwin said the club had been waiting for a significant community project with which to invest the funds rather than supporting a series of small, less significant initiatives.
RC Scottsdale President Michael Irwin presents Bridport SLSC President Geoff Lyons with an inflatable rescue boat. President of the surf life saving club, Geoff Lyons, Federal Member for Bass, said the Gemini twin hull boat was ideal for handling the surf conditions at Bridport and it will enable members to respond quickly to emergencies when it is difficult to launch a conventional boat. The surf life saving club has about 130 members with around 50 nippers participating each Sunday. The main focus of the club now is to gain the necessary approvals to enable construction of the first stage of their club house. Beach activities are one of the main reasons people visit Bridport so the club house will provide a community focal point as well as important infrastructure for the club.
WESTPAC LIFESAVING EXPERIENCE DAY 18th March , 2011 The Westpac Life Saving Experience Day is in its fifth successful year and was this year held at the USLSC. It was such a beautiful day with some very favourable conditions for us all, and the children from different north-west feeder schools had a ball running in and out of the water, riding waves and learning some important life skills about being in the water. The Westpac Life Saving Experience Day is a day held for children with disabilities, and it enables them to have an experience within our organisation that they otherwise don’t have an opportunity to have. It was reported to me by teachers and carers that some of the children only visit the beach and participate in surf/beach activities on this one day a year that Surf Life Saving Tasmania hold, and that the staff and schools feel safe and comfortable leaving our members to take charge of the children in and around the water. Encouraging children who are non- verbal and have very little communication skills is also a valuable learning experience for our members that assisted, as we often take a simple visit to the beach for granted and seeing the children smile, laugh and squeal in delight is truly a heart- warming experience. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that assisted in making this day happen and please know that this was “that day” that you made a significant difference in someone’s life. Thankyou Sharon Kemp, State Liaison Officer
